What is Music?
Music is generally defined as the art of arranging sound to create some combination of form, harmony, melody, rhythm or otherwise expressive content. Exact definitions of music vary considerably around the world, though it is an aspect of all human societies, a cultural universal. While scholars agree that music is defined by a few specific elements, there is no consensus on their precise definitions. The creation of music is commonly divided into musical composition, musical improvisation, and musical performance, though the topic itself extends into academic disciplines, criticism, philosophy, and psychology. Music may be performed or improvised using a vast range of instruments, including the human voice.

How it originated?
It is often debated as to what extent the origins of music will ever be understood, and there are many competing theories which aim to explain it. Many scholars highlight a relationship between the origin of music and the origin of language, and there is disagreement surrounding whether music developed before, after, or simultaneously with language. A similar source of contention surrounds whether music the intentional result of natural selection or was a byproduct spandrel of evolution. Some theories suggest that music arose to assist in organizing labor, improving long-distance communication, benefiting communication with the divine, assisting in community cohesion or as a defense to scare of predators.
Prehistoric music can only be theorized based on findings from paleolithic archaeology sites. Flutes are often discovered, carved from bones in which lateral holes have been pierced; these are thought to have been blown at one end like the “Japanese Shakuhachi”. The Divje flute, carved from a cave bear femur, is thought to be at least 40,000 years old, though there is considerable debate surrounding whether it is truly a musical instrument or an object formed by animals. Instruments such as the seven-holed flute and various types of stringed instruments, such as the Ravanahatha, have been recovered from the Indus Valley civilization archaeological sites.
India has one of the oldest musical traditions in the world—references to Indian classical music (marga) are found in the Vedas, ancient scriptures of the Hindu tradition. The earliest and largest collection of prehistoric musical instruments was found in China and dates back to between 7000 and 6600 BCE.

What are music genres and why are the important?
Technically speaking, a music genre is a conventional category that identifies some pieces of music as belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. It is to be distinguished from musical form and musical style, although in practice these terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Music can be divided into genres in varying ways, such as popular music and art music, or religious music and secular music. The artistic nature of music means that these classifications are often subjective sometimes controversial, and there are many genres which may overlap.
It’s human nature to attempt to make sense of our world and our experiences in it. On the most fundamental level, this is the reason behind music classification: it’s a way of comprehending the things we hear and describing them to others. For example, until the early 1900s, rabbits were classified as rodents belonging to order Rodentia. As more information was gathered about them and their nearest relatives, biologists shifted their perception and moved rabbits into the small, specific taxonomic order Lagomorpha.
Music classification works in precisely the same way. It assesses individual characteristics of songs and albums and places them in categories based on their most closely related creations. This means that genres are defined by the density or sparseness of common traits: dense clusters of similar creations form the heart of a music style while relative gaps in creative approaches form the edges. The example of the taxonomy of rabbit also illustrates an important aspect of musical taxonomy i.e., classifications change over time as more knowledge is gathered about closely related creations. This is particularly true in music as artists contribute to new and innovative genres. In this way, genres tend to be loose and flexible when they are new and become increasingly firm as hundreds and thousands of similar creations are made in and around them.
A fundamental reason which music theorists argue for existence and significance of genres includes recognition and appreciation of talented artists from different cultural backgrounds. More importantly, different genres remind the fact that music has no religion and no language. In fact, music itself is a religion and is a language of emotions.
